We did two dives. The second was 120 meters going under the bow of the SS Maidan which hangs over the drop off; a spectacular sight. We also did some penetration in the bow area and back towards the boiler room. Most of the video is from the first dive. Only the deep part under the bow area is on the second dive. |

Recently members of the Red Sea Explorers team and guests aboard the MV Tala have been using the x-scooters for freediving. Again the x-scooter proves to be the most versatile scooter on the market today. These scooters are good for the 180 meter dives and also to play around in the shallows even without diving gear, not even a pair of fins...

The Red Sea Explorers Team is pleased to bring you the initial footage of the cave exploration project of the fracture cave at Ras Mohammad. The cave entrance is at 80 meters immediately followed by a vertical drop to 95m. Neither the bottom nor the end of the cave were visible to us during the dive which has become the major driving force for further explorations.

The Red Sea Explorers Team decided to pick up and push the survey of a cave at Ras Mohamad, dubbed the "Devil's Eye", explored by a previous team of divers. After 4 days of exploration the team reached a maximum surveyed depth of 130 meters and laid 120 meters of penetration line. The survey stopped in an area (point D on the map) where the cave opened up and seemed to be an endless void. The results were published and the cave was dubbed "The Wakulla of the Red Sea".

This is Monkey Diving the Tala way.
So what is a 'techreational' Red Sea trip? Chris Boardman takes to a liveaboard that allows divers to get more mileage out of their time. Images by Andrew Georgitsis
OUR TWO ZODIACS BOBBED up and down in the heavy swell and stiff wind while the waves crashed over the reef just 50m away. I could see why the reef of Abu Nahas has, over the years, proved to be a popular place for wrecking your ship. We were planning to dive four of these well-known sites but, rather than spend a day and a half doing so, we intended to do it in a single dive, on a single cylinder... It was Faisal Kahlaf, the owner of the liveaboard mv Tala, who dreamed up what he called "monkey diving". I won't go into how it got its name, but the best description I could come up with was "extended range snorkelling". Such a novel concept had to be tried! Monkey diving consists of a stainless-steel backplate for weighting, a single stage cylinder of nitrox under the left arm, a scooter and - well, that's it
