The philosophy that we know today as DIR had its genesis in the Florida cave diving community throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was during this period that early cave diving pioneers and explorers such as Sheck Exley. Bill Main and Parker Turner, along with others, laid the underpinnings of DIR. As cave diving became more popular over the years there were an increasing number of accidents and fatalities. Exely was the first to study the root causes of these accidents. In his landmark book Blue Print for Survival, among other factors, training and equipment were cited as contributing to the cause of many of the accidents that occurred in a cave environment. Both Exley and Main began to understand the necessity to formulate a simplistic approach to equipment configurations when cave diving. The apocryphal story has it that originally this style was named Hogarthian after Bill Hogarth Main. The Hogarthian method referred to the equipment configuration only. |

Elphinstone is one of the most interesting dives in the Red Sea. It is a slim reef that comes up to the surface from 120+ meters. The current conditions and temperature provide the ideal setting for the healthiest of marine ecosystems. The reef is covered with hard and soft coral, fish of all sizes, eels, sharks,,, you name it. Other than the marine life, the reef itself is a majestic formation. |

The Story The tale of the SS Maidan and her last journey began in the early hours of June 9, 1923 - 12:30 am as the SS Maidan left the Port of Sudan, loaded down with 10,000 tons of cargo from India and Africa, and began travelling up the Red Sea back to European ports. The SS Maidan had been used primarily on the Eastern Trade Routes since it’s launching in 1902, and was captained by one of the most experienced Masters, Nicholas Breen, who had also previously completed five similar journeys on the SS Maidan. The unfolding of events in the hours to come only serves to exemplify the fallibility of human judgement. |
