120 Meters on the SS Maidan: Deep Chart Project PDF Print E-mail

We did two dives. The second was 120 meters going under the bow of the SS Maidan which hangs over the drop off; a spectacular sight. We also did some penetration in the bow area and back towards the boiler room. Most of the video is from the first dive. Only the deep part under the bow area is on the second dive.

A group of technical divers in the Red Sea are working on charting different deep technical dive sites. They figured that the number of technical diver is increasing and it is time to put together some charts and info on the deep stuff. Here at Red Sea Explorers we think that this is a great effort benefiting us all.

The group wants to cover deep wrecks, caves, caverns and reef structures. They had already done some great work on the cave in Ras Mohamad and put line in the cave and took measurements. Their work was an important facilitator in allowing us to get to the end of the cave as we used their line most of the way. In the project they will also cover the SS Maidan wreck in Rocky Island. Last week we accompanied Oxana Istratova, a Russian tech instructor and member of the Red Sea Deep Chart Project, on two exploratory dives we conducted as part of her work for Red Sea Deep Chart Project.

We did two dives. The second was 120 meters going under the bow of the wreck which hangs over the drop off; a spectacular sight. We also did some penetration in the bow area and back towards the boiler room. Most of the video is from the first dive. Only the deep part under the bow area is on the second dive. It is always nice to dive the SS Maidan and these two dives went smooth. Coming up from the dive spending the deco time on this spectacular reef never seizes to entertain.

Making one of the many caves and caverns of the shallows at Rocky Island is always fun and very comfortable and soothing you could literally go for a nap. At my 6 meter stop I personally choose to get rid of my doubles and feel more free and relaxed while I do my oxygen segment. We used all standard gasses and Ratio deco for profile management.

Once we shot the empty stages and scooter from our first deep stops about 35 minutes into the dive, the support team new that we had finished our deep segment and were heading home. This is when the, deep support team started their descent to meet us at 50. By the time we hit 30 meters the 15 other guests from the boat and the Red Sea Explorers dive professionals also showed up to greet us. The guests actually finished their dive and started having lunch while we where still doing our deco on the reef.

I hope you enjoy the video.
